Turmeric: Did you know?
I get a lot of questions about Turmeric, mostly in relationship to “how much should I be taking”.
Turmeric is one of those supplements that has been touted as good for everything. In fact, it is pretty incredible. Mostly I prescribe it as an anti-inflammatory. I also think it is a good idea to eat your supplements which means cooking with it. Sometimes you cannot take a therapeutic amount by just eating it as a food.
If you want anti-inflammatory effects you need to get 500 to 1,000 milligrams of curcuminoids per day.”
When using the spice on its own, the common rule of thumb is that there are 200 milligrams of curcumin in one teaspoon of fresh or ground turmeric (though it varies a bit depending on the source and origins).
